Fire, Climate, and Culture in Western Mongolia: reconstructing the past from lake sediments.
Fire, vegetation, and climate in grassland ecosystems are linked in that increased moisture results in greater production of fuels and hence increased incidence of fires. In this talk, I cover the basics of linkages between fire and climate and the ecological impacts of fire with emphasis on the arid grasslands of western Mongolia as reconstructed from charcoal and other proxies extracted from lake sediments. In particular I focus on what appears to be a severing of the fire-climate linkage that is a result of grazing practices.
