Dr. Edward Hansen
Dr. Edward Hansen became the director of the Midstates Consortium on July 1, 2020. He is professor emeriti of Geology at Hope College. Ed obtained a BS in geology from the University of Cincinnati and a PhD in geophysical sciences from the University of Chicago. He began teaching at Hope College in 1984 and retired in 2020. During his career at Hope College he was actively involved in undergraduate research, mentoring 64 summer research students and serving as a counselor on the Council on Undergraduate research for 12 years. Two of these were as chair of the Geoscience Division. Ed’s research career has taken two tracks. He began by studying the chemistry of metamorphic rocks with field areas in Southern India, Sweden, the Coast Ranges of California and the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan. While teaching at Hope College, Ed became intrigued with the coastal dunes along Lake Michigan and began to do research in aeolian geomorphology (the study of landscapes shaped by wind) in 1999. This is now the main focus of his research. Ed is excited about the opportunity to continue to help promote undergraduate education in math and science both through the undergraduate research symposia and through professional development activities for faculty.
