The Midstates Consortium for Math and Science is hosting a workshop for early career faculty, post-docs and advanced graduate students in St. Peter, MN on the beautiful campus of Gustavus Adolphus College on the weekend of July 26-28, 2019.
Workshop leaders Dr. Scott Bur and Dr. Brandy Russell are experienced presenters of programs on professional development, leadership, and teaching as a vocation. Dr. Bur, an organic chemist, and Dr. Russell, a bioinorganic chemist, are both faculty members at Gustavus Adolphus College.
DESCRIPTION: A primary goal for the weekend is to help each participant generate a strategic action plan for the next 2-3 years of their career. Everyone will have time to focus on their personal goals, strategies and actions while creating a flexible and completely individualized plan. Other outcomes are to facilitate networking among colleagues at different institutions and in different disciplines, learn from both the successful and challenging experiences of others, and to encourage each other in all aspects of personal and professional development. The weekend will include group discussions and presentations about teaching, pedagogies, establishing a research group, writing proposals for external funding, collegial interactions, college service, finding a mentor and life beyond work, all within the context of a liberal arts setting. There will be time for individual reflection and strategic planning, as well as time in small groups for giving and getting feedback on your evolving strategic action plan. Given the small-group nature of many of the activities, enrollment is limited to approximately 20 participants.
The Consortium will reimburse travel expenses and provide lodging at Gustavus Adolphus College and meals from Friday dinner through Sunday noon.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND? Faculty just completing their first or second year, newly hired tenure-track or term appointment faculty, and postdocs and advanced graduate students interested in teaching at liberal arts colleges, are encouraged to apply. The program is not disciplinary in nature, but participant backgrounds will broadly include the physical and biological sciences, mathematics, computer science and psychology. Participation is limited to those affiliated with Midstates Consortium schools.
The application deadline is midnight (EDT) on Saturday, June 15, 2019. You will be notified of the status of your application by June 20.

TRAVEL AND SCHEDULE: After your acceptance, you will be contacted regarding your travel arrangements and any special requests regarding local accommodations. In brief, plan to arrive on campus in time for the start of the first session at 3:00 pm on Friday and remain through Sunday noon. On Friday, the opening session will begin at 3:00 pm in the Interpretive Center at the Linnaeus Arboretum. If you arrive at Gustavus close to 3:00 pm there will be time to check into the nearby Arbor View Apartments during a break before dinner. The Friday dinner will be at the Interpretive Center and the evening session will end at 8:30 pm. The Saturday program starts at 8:00 am and continues through dinner. On Sunday, the program runs from 8:00 am to noon, with box lunches to go. Lodging at the Arbor View Apartments is in two-bedroom units with each participant having their own bedroom and bathroom.
Upon confirmation of travel arrangements for all participants, Ann Schutt will contact those who are flying and coordinate transportation between the Minneapolis/St. Paul airport and the Gustavus Adolphus campus on Friday and Sunday afternoons. The final schedule for the meeting, directions and campus map will also be sent out at this time.
