This summer’s workshop for early career faculty, post-docs and graduate students will be held in St. Peter, MN on the beautiful campus of Gustavus Adolphus College on the weekend of July 12-14.

Online registration will continue through Friday, June 28. Advanced graduate students and postdocs interested in teaching at liberal arts colleges, newly hired tenure-track or term appointment faculty, and faculty just completing their first or second years are encouraged to participate.

Dr. Brandy Russell, Consortium Director and Associate Professor of Chemistry at Gustavus Adolphus College, and Dr. Karen Nordell Pearson, Hope College’s Associate Dean for Research and Scholarship will be providing leadership throughout the weekend. Karen has served as the one of the facilitators for this workshop for the last 6 years. There will also be a number of faculty from Consortium campuses, especially Gustavus that will be joining the weekend for several sessions. Please contact Dr. Russell with any questions about the workshop (brussell@gustavus.edu).

Workshop Description: One of the goals for the weekend is to help each participant generate a strategic plan for the next 2-3 years of their career. This will allow each participant to focus on the goals, strategies and actions that will help them succeed in their professional lives and thrive in their personal lives too. Another goal is to provide time for conversation between early career scientists as a mechanism for networking, sharing successes and challenges and encouraging one another. To make this happen, the weekend will be a mixture of time alone for reflection and strategic planning, time in small groups for giving each other feedback on your evolving plans, and time for discussions and presentations with the full group about teaching, pedagogies, establishing a research group, writing proposals for external funding and more.

A draft schedule and more information about the workshop will be posted by mid-May.

What have past participants said about the workshop? Here are their responses to some of the questions on the evaluation.

What were your goals for the weekend and were they met?

  • To jumpstart my new career with discussion and planning based on other experiences and advice. This meeting has exceeded my expectations and I’m anxious to get there and get started!
  • Primarily to meet other new faculty and get ideas to help me hit the ground running in my new position. I found the workshop very helpful on both grounds.
  • I wanted to work on/get inspiration for writing my research statement for an upcoming job search. I feel more resolved to get started after this weekend.
  • Develop ideas for getting my career on track. The workshop far exceeded my expectations. It was much more helpful and stimulating than I anticipated.
