The immune system and graft transplantation
Organ or bone marrow transplantation is the only treatment available for a number of diseases that result in end-stage tissue dysfunction. However, grafts are recognized as foreign by the immune system and are systematically rejected in the absence of immunosuppressive drugs. In this lecture, we will discuss the types of grafts that can be transplanted, the types of rejection that can occur, and the treatments available now or in a not too distant future.
