DNA, sunlight and skin cancer
Everyone by now is aware of the causal relationship between exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet light from tanning booths and skin cancer, but mot may not be familiar with the pathway involved. Our research has been focusing on unraveling the molecular details of the pathway from sunlight to the mutations in DNA that are responsible for skin cancer induction. We will describe our studies on the DNA photoproducts produced by sunlight and their deamination chemistry that results in mutations when replicated by a DNA damage bypass polymerase. The talk will cover DNA photochemistry, replication of photoproduct-containing DNA, and the effects of nucleosome and chromatin structure on photoproduct deamination.
