What we usually think of as "Math" is what our schools teach us: Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, and Calculus. But mathematics is a much broader field, and this choice of topics is largely driven by our societal and cultural needs. More recently mathematicians have recognized aspects of traditional, non-technological cultures that contain significant mathematical ideas and sophistication. These ideas include mathematical games, geometric patterns and designs, number systems, and related areas.
